Delivering Safer Communities In Rye And Hastings
I am delighted that a re-elected Turnbull Government will provide $200,000 for the installation of CCTV cameras in the Rye shopping precinct and on the foreshore.

The funding has been committed under the Coalition’s $40 million Safer Communities Fund.

This is an issue the community has been lobbying for since the tragic death of David Cassai in Rye on New Year’s Eve 2012.

This fatal one-punch hit took the life of an innocent young man and sent a ripple-effect through an entire community.

CCTV cameras play a vital role in deterring crime and also assist police in apprehending offenders.

Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community and these cameras will send a clear message to any would-be offenders that they will be caught.

The Safer Communities Fund delivers on the Coalition’s ongoing commitment to keep Australians safe and secure. Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it happening.

This new $40 million fund will build on the previous work the Coalition undertook through the Safer Streets Programme and the Schools Security Programme.

The Coalition has now committed more than $100 million purely to assist local communities in delivering strategies to address crime and anti-social behaviour.

A re-elected Turnbull Government will also assist in reducing anti-social behaviour in Hastings by providing $50,000 for public safety barriers at Wallaroo Reserve to inhibit illegal monkey bike activity.

This has been a major safety concern for nearby residents for many years and has a negative impact on the local community as well as posing a safety concern for children at the adjacent school.

The new safety barriers will allow more community members to make use of this public reserve without fearing for their safety.
