$60,000 for bushfire mitigation on the Mornington Peninsula

Friday, 11 November 2016

The Mornington Peninsula will receive $60,000 in disaster resilience funding to better prepare local communities from the threat of bushfires.

Funding will be provided to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council under the Federal Government’s $15 million National Bushfire Mitigation Program.

This money will be used to construct a fire access track, apply additional fuel management treatments and to install associated fire prevention infrastructure and signage.

Bushfires are a significant threat on the Mornington Peninsula and we have witnessed firsthand their devastating effects in recent years.

This funding will allow the Shire to mitigate and protect Rosebud, Hastings and Somerville from the impact of bushfires.

These are high-risk bushfire areas where there are significant fuel loads, especially of dry shrubs and plant material that would go up instantly if a fire came through.

Having access tracks and fuel management treatments allows us to plan for the event of a bushfire and to mitigate the risks to lives and property.

Bushfires are an ongoing concern for local residents, especially at this time of year as we head into summer.

This funding will help to boost the resilience of local communities so they are better prepared for natural disasters.
