Tourist Boom for the Mornington Peninsula

Friday, 6 October 2017

International visitors to Australia are flocking to the Mornington Peninsula, with new figures revealing tourists are staying longer and spending more in the region.

The International Visitor Survey (IVS) shows more than 61 thousand international visitors toured the Mornington Peninsula last financial year, spending more than $1,000 per person.

Minister Hunt welcomed the growth in tourism.

“This is great news for the residents and businesses on the Mornington Peninsula,” Mr Hunt said.

“Over the past three years we have seen spending from international tourists increase by 103% for the Peninsula.”

“We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world and it's nice to see so many people from across the globe visiting the South-East of Victoria.”

“A growing tourism industry will drive our economy and create more local jobs.”

It comes after the National Visitor Survey (NVS), released last month, revealed locals also spent big on the Peninsula, injecting $465 million into the local economy during the same period.

Mr Hunt said he wasn’t surprised tourists were flocking to the Mornington Peninsula.

“We live in such a beautiful place with so much to offer,” Mr Hunt said.

“I’m always working to ensure we have the right infrastructure in place to further grow our tourism industry and create more local jobs.”
