New Senior School for Newhaven College
Students and staff at Newhaven College in Phillip Island will have full use of a new Senior School thanks to funding from the Turnbull Government.

Federal Member for Flinders, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, officially opened the school’s new Senior School and Science, Arts & Technology Wing today and took a tour of the new facilities.

“It is great to visit Newhaven College and see the new facilities firsthand and the impact they will have on students’ learning potential,” Minister Hunt said.

“These new learning spaces take into account the latest in educational research and will see students learn more effectively.”

The Turnbull Government delivered $1.4 million in funding from the Capital Grants Program.

Minister Hunt said students and the whole school community would benefit from these new facilities.

“While I know it was with a heavy heart that the school said goodbye to the Boys Home Road campus, to have all the Newhaven students on the one campus is an amazing sight.

“This is the first time in Newhaven’s history that Prep to Year 12 will be together at the one campus and it will help build on this already incredible school community.”

“Funding for these new facilities is part of our commitment to ensuring students have the support they need to succeed in the classroom.”

Minister for Education, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham said in addition to funding for projects like the Senior School, the Turnbull Government was also delivering a new funding system to ensure every student gets the resources they need.

“We’re overhauling Australia’s schools funding system and boosting investment to Newhaven College from around $8303 per student this year to about $11,593 over the next decade. The changes ensure students with the greatest needs get the greatest level of resources,” Minister Birmingham said.

“We know that funding and buildings alone don’t make a great school, so we’ve asked a panel of education experts led by David Gonski to recommend how schools can best use the extra resources we’re delivering to boost student outcomes.

“Families and teachers can see exactly what our $25.3 billion funding boost means for their local schools by visiting our funding estimator at www.education.gov.au/qualityschools and they can learn more about our quality reforms.”
