Commercial whaling proposal: just say no Mr Rudd

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

The news that the Australian Government is meeting with Japan on whaling, behind closed doors, is another nail in the coffin of this Government’s commitment to put an end to Japanese whaling.

This Government’s willingness to give Japan a green light for commercial whaling effectively issues a death sentence on whales not only in the Southern Ocean but throughout the world.

There must be no secret shabby deals done on whaling and there must be no recommencement of commercial whaling.

Very simply, we should protect these majestic creatures against slaughter.

Last week the Rudd Government declared it would put forward a proposal that would effectively give Japan an open licence to continue to whale the world’s oceans.

This was backed up by Japan declaring that it would push through the IWC a plan to recommence commercial whaling.

This is yet another blight on Mr Rudd’s green credentials and another E minus for Mr Garrett.
