A re-elected Liberal National Government will invest up to $1.5 million to restore the heavily eroded Mt Martha North Beach.
Funding will be provided for Stage 3 of restoration works to replenish the sand and provide permanent protection to the cliffs and coastal area.
Stage 1 included the replenishment of sand at the beach and Stage 2 saw the implementation of the wall revetment plan; however these have failed to provide a permanent solution. Funding for Stage 3 will incorporate:
– Design with the community and delivery of measures to permanently prevent ongoing erosion;
– Sand replenishment;
– Stabilisation of the cliff and coastline, including further revetment works and native environmental plantings
Liberal Member for Flinders, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP said erosion at the beach has been a significant environmental issue since 2003 and the State Labor Government has failed to provide funding to permanently address the issue.
“The Mt Martha North Beach Group, along with the local community, has worked tirelessly for many years to seek support for a permanent solution to the erosion at the beach”, Mr Hunt said.
“The issue at Mount Martha North Beach has unfortunately been kicked down the road by the Labor Government and the local environment and residents have paid the price for far too long”
“I have advocated on behalf of the Mt Martha community to the State Labor Government on numerous occasions over my time as the Member for Flinders, as well as attended community rallies and meetings calling for action”
“This funding will work to restore this important beach which has been left stripped of sand, exposing clay and bedrock. I call on the State Government to match this funding to break the Labor gridlock and restore this beach and the environment for the local community”
