JOINT MEDIA RELEASE WITH HON MALCOLM TURNBULL MP, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH, MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS
The historic Bondi Pavilion on Bondi Beach will receive $1 million under the Australian Government's Protecting National Historic Sites programme.
Environment Minister, Greg Hunt and Communications Minister and Local MP, Malcolm Turnbull congratulated Waverley Council, who will use the $1 million to carry out important design and conservation work on Bondi Pavilion that will enhance visitor understanding of and access to Bondi Beach.
“The Protecting National Historic Sites programme is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to protecting and maintaining the historic values of places recognised on Australia's National Heritage List,” Minister Hunt said.
“These sites help tell the story of our unique and diverse heritage, which is something all Australians should learn about.”
Communications Minister and Member for Wentworth, Malcolm Turnbull said that he was pleased that the Federal Government had chosen to support such an important piece of Australia’s Natural and Built Heritage.
“Bondi Beach is one of the 103 places on Australia’s National Heritage List, which recognises those places that define our nation's natural, historic and Indigenous heritage.
“The Pavilion is a gateway to Bondi Beach, the most recognisable beach in Australia and perhaps the world. It is a part of our local history and home to the world's first formally documented surf lifesaving club, the Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club, which was formed in 1907. The support the Federal Government is giving to this piece of our heritage will ensure that it remains relevant as a piece of social infrastructure and can be used for future generations.” Minister Turnbull said.
“It is important that future generations have the opportunity to visit places on the National Heritage List and I am pleased that the Government is providing funding to help maintain and develop this important historic site,” Mr Hunt said.
