The Turnbull Government is providing $6.1 million to the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health to support vital ongoing health and medical research being undertaken by the centre.
This investment will enable the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health to build on research work it has undertaken in relation to asthma, retinal photography and artificial intelligence, the degeneration of muscles, and precision medicine for epilepsy sufferers.
This is cutting-edge research being conducted in Melbourne and will directly benefit patients across Australia and beyond.
The funding from the Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) builds on an earlier $2.22 million grant provided to the centre through the fund.
Melbourne Academic Centre for Health is an internationally peer reviewed and National Health and Medical Research Council accredited entity and is one of seven Advanced Health Research and Translation Centres (AHRTC) across the country.
These centres are collaborations of health service providers, medical research institutes and universities that focus on practical solutions to healthcare problems that can immediately benefit patients.
The Turnbull Government is committed to improving the health services for all Australians and will continue to invest in better treatment, care and research that makes a difference to the lives of Australians.
The MRFF is a $20 billion investment in the health of Australians, our economy and the sustainability of our health system.
The $6.1 million is part of the $1.7 billion investment the Government has made in health and medical research through the MRFF as part of the 2018-19 Budget.
The Turnbull Government's ongoing investments through the MRFF are supercharging the growth in cutting-edge health and medical research, leading to new treatments and cures that are improving health outcomes across Australia while fuelling jobs, economic growth and export potential.
