This Sunday, the Bass Coast Breakers will host their second annual DonateLife Women’s Football Showcase at Dalyston Recreation Reserve.
The Club received $6,780 through the Australian Government’s Community Awareness Grants Program to encourage more local community members to discuss with their families and register to become organ and tissue donors.
The showcase coincides with DonateLife Week, which encourages all Australians to start talking about organ and tissue donation and to join the Australian Organ Donor Register online.
Breaker’s captain, Chelsea Connell explained that the showcase aimed to promote women’s football on the Bass Coast, as well as organise talks with each team to create understanding and awareness of the importance of organ donation.
“In 2017, 1,675 Australians received a lifesaving transplant thanks to the generosity of organ donors,” Ms Connell said.
“It’s so important that we help raise awareness and registrations so that the number of lives saved can grow.
“The philosophy behind donating tissue and organs to save the life of another really resonates with our club.
“Over the past two years we have worked hard to build an inclusive and welcoming community. Team work and looking out for each other on and off the field is a big part of who we have become.”
Federal Member for Flinders, the Hon Greg Hunt MP applauded the club for their proactive approach to organ and tissue donation.
“This is about saving and changing lives,” Minister Hunt said. “I encourage residents from all across the electorate to get involved in DonateLife Week by supporting local events, having your own workplace morning tea or by registering your decision to become a donor online.”
“I look forward seeing this showcase in action and applaud the Bass Coast Breakers for helping to lift the number of registered local organ and tissue donors.”
