I am calling on the State Government to improve safety at the notoriously dangerous intersection of Forest Drive and Nepean Highway in Mount Martha.
I first wrote to VicRoads about this issue in August, 2013 and have been pursuing it ever since.
The danger of this intersection was highlighted recently by a fatal accident on November 25 last year.
Following the accident, local residents approached me to take further action on this issue. I invited VicRoads’ senior officers to meet with me at the intersection to see first-hand how dangerous the intersection can be.
In early December last year, I met with VicRoads officers at the site to discuss options for improving safety in the area.
The meeting with VicRoads was productive and showed their genuine interest in improving safety for motorists.
VicRoads is doing a thorough investigation on the recent fatal crash and is looking at the entire Mount Martha section which includes a number of dangerous intersections along that stretch of Nepean Highway, including at Uralla Road.
I am pleased the speed limit approaching Forest Drive has been reduced to 80km/h but more can be done.
I have driven through the intersection on many occasions and share the community’s concerns.
I will continue working with community members and VicRoads to improve safety at Forest Drive and will not rest until this issue has been resolved.
