Mornington athletes and soccer stars have plenty of reasons to get out and get active today with the official opening of a new athletics track and four soccer fields at Civic Reserve in Mornington.
Following three years of construction on the $6.5 million facility, Federal Member for Flinders, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP joined with members of the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and the community on Saturday to officially open the new facilities.
“Three years ago, the ‘Where is our Track’ campaign made the case for the need for a state of the art athletics facility here in Mornington, while the Mount Martha Soccer Club continued their search for a more permanent home,” Minister Hunt said. “Now we can all join together to say here is your track and welcome home.”
“This opening would not have happened without the hard work of many in our community and I would like to acknowledge the work of the Mount Martha Soccer Club, Mornington Little Athletics, the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and my friend and former colleague, Chris Crewther.”
“It has been an honour to work alongside you all and to help deliver $3 million in Commonwealth funds for this project. Now the important work begins for both clubs to help develop the next generation of athletic stars on the Peninsula.”
Senator for Victoria David Van echoed Minister Hunt’s comments, congratulating the community on the completion of the project.
“It is fantastic to be here with the Mornington Peninsula Community to open the new facilities here at Civic Reserve,” Senator Van said.
“The Morrison Government is committed to helping more Aussies get more active, more often and these new soccer pitches and athletics track will mean more Peninsula locals can get active in their own community.”
“In order to invest into the community on a scale such as this, you need a strong economy. That is why the Morrison Government is providing the economic certainty to ensure we can fund the essential services Australians rely on, as well as invest into the future infrastructure of our nation.”
