A re-elected Coalition Government will invest $400,000 in two new Green Army projects for the Yarra Valley Rail Trail, and for Healesville and Coldstream’s natural reserves.
The Green Army provides opportunities for young Australians aged 17-24 years to gain training and experience which will assist them in the future to find jobs, while generating real benefits for the local environment.
The first new Green Army project will:
• Restore the local streams and environment along the Yarra Valley Rail Trail, including in Healesville, Yarra Glen, Coldstream, Yering and Tarrawarra;
• Improve trails and public access which will help to protect habitat of local threatened species; and
• Deliver better water quality through removal of invasive species, replanting of native species and new fencing.
The second new Green Army project will:
• Rejuvenate local environmental reserves of Healesville, Coldstream, Badger Creek and Mt Tobblewong;
• Remove invasive species, replant with native species and conduct fauna monitoring; and
• Protect and enhance habitat for local threatened species, including the Buxton Gum, Round-leaf Pomaderris and Grey-headed Flying Fox.
“These projects will help to ensure that the Yarra Valley’s local areas and environment are protected and threatened species’ habitats are strengthened,” Mr Smith said.
“The Green Army team will work in partnership with local community groups to deliver the projects.”
The Green Army has been a huge success with 1145 projects announced nationally and more than 700 projects already rolled out in urban, rural and remote areas.
In Casey, nine Green Army projects have already been rolled-out – and 114 projects are completed or underway across Victoria.
The Green Army is a hands-on, practical environmental action programme that supports local communities to undertake environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia while offering participants valuable skills and practical experience.
“We will work with local government, local residents and community groups in the design of the projects,” Minister Hunt said.
“Tony is a fantastic local member who regularly talks to me about the environmental needs of his local community. He should be congratulated for advocating for these projects so strongly.”
The Green Army programme not only benefits the environment, but also provides participants with skills and experience which will support them in finding jobs or further education.
