As part of our $1.5 billion Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program, The Morrison Government has approved funding for road community projects on the Mornington Peninsula, which is boosting the economy during COVID-19 by supporting local jobs creators and businesses.
Federal Member for Flinders, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP said getting shovels in the ground on local construction projects was important for maintaining jobs and economic growth in Flinders.
Across the Peninsula, the following Projects will be taking place:
- Resurfacing of Long Point Road, French Island
- Constructing a missing link along Cool Store Road in Hastings
- Constructing a needed footpath along Illaroo Street, Capel Sound
- Constructing a requested footpath along Harrap Road, Mount Martha
- Constructing a footpath along Alma Street and Field Street, Rye
- Delivery of a pedestrian footpath and a pedestrian refuge at the intersection of Park Lane/Frankston Flinders Road, Somerville
“Every concreate slab laid is another steppingstone to help our local community and small businesses out of the COVID-19 pandemic.” Minister Hunt said.
“We have moved quickly to approve funding for these project, including the Harrap Road footpath, to get more people back into important jobs and out of financial hardship.”
“This footpath has been long requested by the community and I am proud that the Morrison Government has delivered the funds to get this project underway.
“The benefits of these projects are twofold, on one hand giving much needed support to local businesses and job creators and on the other making our roads more resilient to get the people of Flinders where they need to, sooner and safer”.
“We will work closely with the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council ensure local projects get underway immediately to support the growth of new and important jobs and businesses.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said almost 5,000 projects have already been nominated under the program with around $450 million paid to councils across Australia.
“Our funding boost is helping communities across Australia accelerate priority projects to get people into jobs and stimulate our economy,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“We know how important our support is to communities who have faced the combined effects of drought, bushfires and now COVID-19, which is why we are backing projects to create employment and business opportunities while cutting travel times, as well as making our roads and communities safer.
“We are moving decisively to deliver the support our councils and communities need to get through this pandemic and get back on their feet. Under the program, Councils have already nominated almost 5,000 projects with construction to be completed by the end of this year.”
In May 2020, the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government also pre-paid $1.3 billion of this year’s Financial Assistance Grant to provide untied funding for all local councils across Australia to spend on local priorities.
