Newhaven College students are set to benefit from the construction of a new double-court gymnasium after the Flinders MP Greg Hunt announced today a $1,750,000 Australian Government grant.
Funding through the Capital Grants Program will go towards the construction of a $6.3 million new multi-purpose gymnasium, to encourage participation and further develop the next generation of Phillip Island athletes.
Mr Hunt congratulated Newhaven College on being selected for the grant and said it would be in addition to the record levels of funding the Turnbull Government is investing in schools.
“These funds will ensure students at Newhaven College have the infrastructure necessary to help them get the most out of their time at school,” Mr Hunt said.
“I look forward to visiting the new facility when it is completed and being shown by the students how to shoot the perfect three-pointer.”
Newhaven College Principal Gea Lovell has welcomed the announcement and has said that the Federal Government funding will enable the school to continue to implement its masterplan, as they transition to one campus on Phillip Island Road.
“We are excited to see the construction of the multi-purpose indoor sports facility, which will allow students to participate in a range of sports in all conditions”. Ms Lovell said.
“This announcement builds on the progress being made on the construction of the new Specialist Art, Science and Technology wing and Senior School building that received $1.4 million funding last year from the Federal Government.”
Mr Hunt said the Capital Grants Program provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure where they otherwise may not have access to sufficient resources.
“The Turnbull Government is committed to improving the quality of our school education and ensuring students have access to the resources they need so they are equipped with the skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive world,” Mr Hunt said.
“The Turnbull Government is also investing an additional $23.4 billion in Australia’s schools through the Gonski needs-based funding plan that will ensure students who need the most support, get the most support as quickly as possible.”
