Headspace supports tens of thousands of Australians each year who are struggling with mental health problems by providing vital counselling services in person and online.
That’s why the Turnbull Government is supporting headspace with more than $92 million funding this year, to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians.
100 headspace centres operate around the country, providing support to around 80,000 young people each year.
The Turnbull Government is investing $28.9 million to establish a further 10 headspace centres by 2019, with a specific focus on increasing access for young people living in regional and rural areas.
Since 2006, almost 355,000 young people have received support or advice from headspace in person, over the phone or online from the eheadspace service.
With one in four young Australians aged 16-24 years experiencing mental illness in any given year, ‘headspace day’ – today – is an opportunity to focus on the importance of youth mental health.
This year, headspace day is focusing on educating young people on the importance of taking care of their mental health issues early, before they become more serious.
Intervention at an early stage can reduce the duration and impact of mental health conditions.
Headspace provides free or low-cost holistic care to young people aged 12-25 years in four key areas – mental health, related physical health, alcohol and other drug use, and social and vocational support.
Today we’re asking you to have a conversation and share your personal tips on how you take care of your mental health so that young people can see the many different ways to maintain a healthy headspace.
To get involved visit www.headspaceday.org.au and download a headspace day placard; then share a personal mental health tip on the placard, take a photo with it and post it to social media using
#headspaceday.
Young people who need support with their mental health can visit www.headspace.org.au to locate their nearest service, or contact eheadspace at www.eheadspace.org.au or on 1800 650 890.
