Funding of $743,900 will help restore and improve coastlines throughout Corangamite and the surf coast including in the communities of Jan Juc, Anglesea, Airey’s Inlet, Ocean Grove and St Leonards.
The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, under the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme, will support local groups and land managers with grants aimed at achieving an enduring improvement in the extent and quality of biodiversity within the Corangamite coastal areas.
Funding of $706,495 to improve the Corangamite coastline is being provided to public and private landholders and farmers.
Funding of $37,405 is being provided to six coastal community groups:
• Ocean Grove Coast Care
• Friends of Edwards Point
• Anglesea, Aireys Inlet Society for the Protection of Flora and Fauna
• Surfers Appreciating Natural Environment
• Jan Juc Coastcare
• Bellarine Catchment Network.
“This funding will support community involvement in protecting and enhancing our coastal areas,” Minister Hunt said.
“It will boost community engagement and provide tangible on ground outcomes.”
“Across Australia, the National Landcare Programme is supporting local Landcare networks and community groups to restore ecosystems and protect natural assets, so the community can enjoy the long-term benefit of a healthy and livable environment.”
Federal Member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson MP, said she was delighted that local community groups who work tirelessly to protect the environment were being supported by the Australian Government.
“Over the coming months, this funding will support local groups to carry out important on-ground works to address some of the crucial environmental issues facing the region,” Ms Henderson said.
The funding will focus on the coastal zone, including the Bellarine Ramsar site and surf coast. It will aim to conserve habitat and boost community involvement in local conservation.
“Corangamite CMA has a great track record in managing projects that consistently deliver good environmental outcomes in southern Victoria,” Ms Henderson said.
The Turnbull Government is investing $1 billion to help support better natural resource management across Australia through the National Landcare Programme.
This includes more than $450 million directed in regional funding through to Australia’s 56 natural resource management organisations.
