Federal Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt MP, says a new, free support network is now available to stand up for the rights older people in need in the local community.
“The Turnbull Government understands that, from time to time, older people, their families and carers need help to navigate their legal and aged care rights,” Minister Hunt said.
“I speak with senior residents of Flinders regularly and I know how vulnerable they can be. That is why the new Older Persons Advocacy Network will be of such benefit, by giving them a strong voice.”
Mr Hunt said the new service is easily accessed, through a website and a freecall number.
“Flinders residents are automatically connected with our local Victorian advocacy organisation,” Mr Hunt said.
“Trained advocates then assess their needs and can provide personalised service and meet with them if necessary.
“The aim is to ensure their rights are respected and that they can make informed decisions about their future.”
Aged Care Minister, Ken Wyatt AM, said the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) would immediately provide strong local voices for individuals in need.
“A key element of our ageing and aged care reform agenda is empowering older Australians ensuring they have voices to speak up for them when they need it most,” Minister Wyatt said.
“Through OPAN’s network of nine service delivery organisations, we are now providing a nationally consistent model of independent advocacy.
“This supports all elder Australians including those with varied needs who might be living with a disability or dementia, are care leavers, or are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.”
Mr Hunt said OPAN help was available to all Flinders residents aged 55 and over, including those who may be living with a disability or dementia, or were from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The Turnbull Government has provided $25.7 million over the next three years for OPAN to deliver the new National Aged Care Advocacy Program.
“This service is about respect for local seniors’ rights and individual needs and expectations,” Mr Hunt said.
Older Flinders residents, their families or carers in need of advocacy should go to www.opan.com.au or call 1800 700 600.
