During National Volunteer Week, May 12-18, I am encouraging residents to take advantage of the Do Something Near You portal and volunteer for a worthy organisation.
As a volunteer, all you need to do is type your postcode or suburb into http://www.dosomethingnearyou.com.au/Greg-Hunt and find a group that suits you.
Run by the Do Something charity, the website offers an easy and innovative way for people to volunteer.
Volunteers can sign up for the Sorrento SES, join the Rotary Club of Hastings Western Port, support the Tyabb Junior Football Club, help out the Woolamai Surf Life Saving Club or the Vinnies op shop in Cowes, just to name a few.
This year marks 25 years of National Volunteer Week and the theme, Celebrate the Power of Volunteering, captures the sense of purpose, strength and inspiration of our nation’s volunteers.
More than six million Australian adults participate in voluntary work and they are to be commended on their dedication.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of community organisations and many groups are in need of additional volunteers to allow them to continue their good work.
Equally, there are many enthusiastic would-be volunteers looking for meaningful and rewarding opportunities in their backyard.
Do Something Near You connects volunteers with appropriate community organisations.
By giving back and volunteering, we can make our communities stronger and happier places to live.
Take this opportunity to Do Something Near You and make a difference.
Community groups and not-for-profit organisations can register to be included on the website at no cost to their organisation at http://www.dosomethingnearyou.com.au/register-organisation
