Federal Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt MP, is pleased to announce a new round of infrastructure upgrades are on the way around the electorate as part of the Australian Government’s ‘Roads to Recovery’ (R2R) program.
With several new projects scheduled to start in the upcoming months, Minister Hunt was hopeful that these vital road upgrades would help reduce fatal car accidents around the Flinders Electorate.
“Reducing road trauma is a responsibility for us all—it’s about safer drivers, safer cars and safer roads,” Minister Hunt said.
“With so many projects nearing completion and many more ready to start, the ‘Roads to Recovery’ program reaffirms this Government’s commitment to making local roads safer and reducing this nation’s road toll.
“This ongoing funding commitment will ensure local councils are better able to decide what local roads are priorities and how money should be spent.”
Funding from the Roads to Recovery Programme is provided to all local government authorities to assist them maintain and upgrade their local roads.
In the 2017-18 Budget, the Australian Government confirmed its 2016 commitment to provide an additional $50 million on an ongoing basis to the Roads to Recovery Programme from 2019-20, to bring the annual allocation to $400 million across all councils in Australia.
Total funding for the programme from 2013-14 to 2020-21 is set to total $4.4 billion.
Minister for Infrastructure Darren Chester urged local councils, using funding from the Roads to Recovery Program, to focus on improving road safety outcomes when undertaking local road upgrades.
“When selecting projects, I am strongly urging councils to consider the likelihood they will reduce fatalities and serious injuries,” Mr Chester said.
“The Australian Government has demonstrated its firm commitment to R2R by increasing funding available to councils across Australia from $350 million to $400 million a year beginning in 2019-2020, and ensuring the continuation of the program.
“Obtaining detailed information on project outcomes is critical to ensuring the Australian Government is delivering the most robust road upgrade projects to demonstrably reduce the number of serious crashes across the Australian road network.
“I look forward to continuing the successful relationship between the Australian Government and local councils through the Roads to Recovery program. By working together, we can make a difference to improve road safety,” Mr Chester said.
