I would like to thank Ken Smith for his dedication to the community over the past 30 years, following his announcement that he will be retiring from State Parliament in November.
I have known Ken since I was a small boy. He worked with my father Alan Hunt in the Upper House where they both devoted significant service to Western Port and the Mornington Peninsula.
Ken has always shown a strong commitment to the communities he has served and of which he has been a part.
Our paths have crossed many times over the years, serving different parts of Victoria.
During the past 11 years Ken has served as the member for Bass, making an incredible difference to the community and helping many individuals.
His commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities has been inspiring and I am sure there are many people whose lives are better off because of the work he has done.
Ken was also integral making the Koo Wee Rup Bypass a reality, which will be a tremendous benefit to local residents once completed.
Ken has been an integral member of the Liberal Party, serving under Premiers past and present.
During his time with the Coalition, he has held many important positions including Government Whip, Opposition Whip, Spokesperson for Gaming, Spokesperson for Fisheries, Shadow Minister for Gaming, Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Shadow Minister for Local Government and his current role as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
I congratulate Ken on all of his achievements and thank him for his service.
I wish Ken all the best for his future endeavors and send my regards to his family, who will no doubt be pleased to be able to enjoy more time with him next year.
