St John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Flinders will host a performance by the Australian Chamber Choir to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac, thanks to a $3,660 Commonwealth Government grant.
Flinders MP Greg Hunt said the performance would be a fitting tribute to the local men and women who served.
“This will give people in Flinders and across the Mornington Peninsula an opportunity to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac and honour our nation’s history in a unique way,” Mr Hunt said.
Parish recitals organiser John Barren said it would be a wonderful performance and a lovely way to honour our fallen servicemen and women.
“We are very excited to have the Australian Chamber Choir perform Soul of Anzac at the church,” Mr Barren said.
“The recital, which is a moving piece of prose about the Anzacs, is based on the poem by Roderic Quinn.
“We are very lucky to be hosting the premier performance here in Flinders.”
The Soul of Anzac features music from Germany, Turkey, France and England and contemplates the theme of war and peace.
Mr Barren said the performance was open to the public.
“We are looking forward to the performance and encourage members of the community to attend. The grant from the Commonwealth Government has allowed us to keep ticket prices affordable so that more people can enjoy it,” he said.
Mr Barren said the church was a peaceful place for people to remember those who served.
“There is a memorial chapel in the church, which pays tribute to the seven men from Flinders who served in World War I. This is a place where people can pay their respects or have a quiet moment of reflection following the service.”
Mr Hunt said the Commonwealth Government was providing $125,000 in grants for community groups across the electorate to install memorials or host events to commemorate the nation’s centenary of service.
“I am delighted that St John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Flinders has received this Commonwealth Government grant to enable the church to put on this commemorative performance,” Mr Hunt said.
The performance will take place on Sunday, 15 March at 3pm at St John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Flinders. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased through the church on 5989 1159 or through www.trybooking.com/117554 with code number 117554.
