I’m pleased to announce the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port region will host four new projects under Round 2 of the government’s Green Army programme.
Projects include restoring bushland, mangrove planting, track maintenance, re-vegetation and weed control.
The Westernport Bay Green Army Project delivers on an election commitment and I am delighted to see this project getting underway.
The Green Army has been an incredible success story for both the local environment and those involved. Restoration of Bushland on the Mornington Peninsula will build on the good work that has already been done across a number of sites on the peninsula.
The feedback on the success of these projects has been overwhelming, both from the community groups and from the young people involved.
Many of the participants have already lined up jobs in the environmental sector for when their project finishes. This is a fantastic result and I look forward to many more young people taking an interest and gaining training in environment protection.
Young people interested in joining these new projects will be able to apply through the appointed Service Providers.
Participation is open to a diverse range of young people, including Indigenous Australians, school leavers, gap year students, graduates and job seekers. Participants must be aged between 17 and 24 years and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Participants will receive an allowance for the duration of the project.
Applications are also open for community organisations, environment groups and local councils to put forward new projects for Round 3 of the Green Army. Applications close 17 March.
Green Army project activities could involve restoring and protecting native habitat, weeding, revegetation, cleaning up waterways, creeks and rivers, fencing, gully remediation, erosion prevention, protection and conservation of heritage places and values or monitoring and surveying on Indigenous and non-Indigenous land.
A full list of approved Round 2 projects and further information on the Green Army can be found at www.environment.gov.au/green-army Young people interested in joining the Green Army can apply through the appointed Service Providers for each state and territory.
